Roughly fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Law enforcement then located numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.

City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.

A senior representative stated the attack rendered him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
