The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
