The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
