New research indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying these medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
